Neurological disease in geckos

Neurological disease in geckos

The brain and the spinal cord in geckos are similar to those found in mammals. There are disease processes that affect the nervous system but these are not common.

What is Enigma Syndrome?

Leopard geckos are prone to a neurological disorder of the brain and spinal cord called the Enigma Syndrome (ES).

ES affects the balance and cognition of affected geckos.

The symptoms of this disease are fitting, not eating and constant circling.

What causes ES?

The main cause is faulty genetics as a result of poor breeding practices.

Can ES be treated?

There is no cure for ES, however it can be managed by reducing environmental stressors such as removing tank mates and reduced handling.

If your gecko is severely affected it may need to be hand fed for the rest of its life.

If you think your gecko is affected, you should take him to see your veterinarian.
