Parasitic diseases in geckos

Parasites are essentially creatures that feed off another animal. There are two basic types of parasites, internal ones that live inside the body (endoparasite), and external ones that live on the outside (ectoparasite).

What types of parasite affect geckos?

One example of an internal parasite is roundworm. Roundworms and tapeworms are found inside the intestines.

Mites and ticks are external parasites that feed off the gecko’s blood and cause irritation to the  skin.

If you see any moving black or red dots on your gecko’s skin, or worms in his feces, you need to take him to the veterinarian as these are all signs of a parasite infestation.

If you take your gecko to an exotic specialist veterinarians with a sample of his feces they can usually test this to look for any signs of parasites or worms.
